The active/ homeopathic ingredients in Quietude are: Hyoscyamus niger, Nux moshata, Passiflora, and Stramonium. The inactive ingredients are lactose, and croscarmellose sodium.

Hyoscyamus niger or Henbane was used by the Ancient Greeks, and in Asia and Europe during the Middle Ages in combination with Mandragora and Deadly Nightshade; it is known for its psychotropic attributes. It can be toxic in low doses. It has been known to cause hallucinations, dilated pupils, restlessness, and flushed skin, and less commonly vomiting and convulsions.

Nux moshata affects the digestive track and dries the eyes, but can have a soporific effect on the consumer. This may manifest as a feeling of vertigo or unpleasant intoxication. It has been reported to cause headaches and emotional liability.

Passiflora, or Passion flower has long been used medicinally by the Native Americans to treat insomnia, hysteria, and epilepsy. It may contain trace amounts of certain natural antidepressants.

Quietude® by Boiron is an inexpensive, though not widely available homeopathic sleep aid. We present this information reluctantly, as finding any information regarding the formula including customer testimonials has proven almost impossible. We have seen the company Boiron positively mentioned with regard to its homeopathic products, but again, neither with great frequency or enthusiasm. They do not offer free trials or samples, as far as we can tell.

There are numerous other reputable products on the market, searchable and supported by longstanding customers who post enthusiastically about their continued success. Quietude® does not contain natural lithium which has recently been reported to successfully balance emotions, stabilize mood, facilitate restful sleep, and ease the symptoms of mild to moderate depression, bi-polar and other mood disorders.

The homeopahtic ingredients used to make Quietude® are “thought to stimulate our body's natural resources”, one website claims. A homepathic solution is perhaps safer for the short term by people experiencing trouble falling asleep. Be advised it is often reported that sleeping for eight hours is required by both body and brain for optimal functioning.

This product appears to be sufficient as a sleep aid, however it is not labeled for symptoms of mood disorders such as mood swings, unexplainable outbursts, nervousness, or emotional liability associated with PMS or Menopause. The consumer who is aware that the cause of his or her sleeplessness may have its root in these or other manifestations of mild to moderate depression, bipolar disorder, and an anxiety disorder, may look to find a supplement which contains the safe and natural form of mineral lithium, Lithium Orotate.
