Review
Summary |
So many consumer products on the market today are compounds. From packaged food to health supplies, everything is made with a long list of ingredients, some of them strange and unpronounceable, and seem intent on providing you with “everything you need” in one or another area of your life. Even our vitamins and other, natural supplements are chock full of every kind of herb and mineral ever used. Sometimes you want a break. You want to simplify. You want to target one ailment or aspect of your life that needs immediate, specific attention. You want to buy one bottle of one remedy, so that you know that is all your getting in your daily dose.
Valerian Root has been used in Europe for ever so long as a sedative and “hypnotic agent” Valerian works in harmony with your natural cycle to help promote relaxation
The etymology here is interesting, from the Latin Vale meaning strong or potent. Does this refer to the plants effect or rather to its pungent odor? We will investigate Valerian, its properties and purported uses in the following review. We are considering the product as sold by Puritan’s Pride, a respected purveyor of vitamins and minerals for over fifty years. They are offering Valerian Root in the form of a soft gel at a fairly affordable price.

Valerian, or Valeriana officinalis, sometimes termed Garden Heliotrope or St. George´s Herb, is a flowering plant indigenous to Europe and parts of Asia. It is best known for its supposed sedative effect. It was at one time prescribed for the maintenance of symptoms of epilepsy but recent research does not support this application. In both allopathic and complementary medicine Valerian is employed for insomnia, reducing stress and anxiety and improving mood.

The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) gives valerian a class 1 safety rating, indicating that it is a safe herb with a wide dosage range.
Some people, however, experience adverse reactions to valerian. Rather than feeling the calming or sleep-inducing effects, they suddenly feel nervous, anxious and restless after taking the herb and may experience heart palpitations.
Valerian is also mentioned not to be used if taking anesthesia, sedatives or anti-anxiety medications without first consulting a healthcare practitioner.
Withdrawal symptoms may occur.

 | Final Thoughts |
|
Valerian Root, sold here by Puritan’s Pride may have some usefulness as a sleep facilitating herb. In some individuals it has a rather calming effect. It may prove valuable for menstrual cramps and ulcers and high blood pressure. All this is said with the understanding that contemporary research on the subject is far from conclusive.
A good night’s rest is so important to one’s overall health and sense of happiness and well-being. Frequent inability to sleep soundly may indicate an imbalance, a mood or anxiety disorder. One should consider all the symptoms and look for products that contain Lithium Orotate to potentially relieve the symptoms of a mild to moderate disorder.
